Carly and another friend and I shared a house together with our three dogs for almost a year – about 8 years ago! My how time flies…

This is Carly’s family today! She and Dean were engaged earlier this year, and as well as Carly turning 30, I thought it would be nice to have a little photo session as way of celebration. Rhana the liver-spotted dalmatian still as gorgeous and aloof as ever, and Brock being his handsome, lovable self – don’t they just make the most wonderfully beautiful family?

Congratulations Carly and Dean! May your love continue to blossom and grow with every passing day. xx

Zachariah Alexander Kramer was born at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide on Monday the 9th of April at 8.55pm. His parents asked me to photograph his entrance into the world which was both an honour and an extreme privilege… He is a very special bub in more ways than one – he has a congenital heart defect called Transposition of the Great Arteries – or a hole in his heart, which his parents were informed about at his 20 week scan. He has already undergone the first procedure called a Balloon Septostomy to help open his heart valves temporarily – he will go to Melbourne soon for an operation to permanently correct the defect.

You can find out more about CHD and TGA at the HeartKids website – you can also donate to help get these kids the operations they need

I shot WOMADelaide again this year – this is the stunning Dobet Gnahoré at Taste The World, a stage set up for the music artists to cook a dish from their country of origin.

Dobet cooked “Fish Alko” from her native Ivory Coast.

FISH ALOKO

INGREDIENTS:
30 plantain bananas
10 sweet potatoes
2kg tomatoes
2kg onions
5 small pimentos
4-5KG fish (such as Colin, codfish)
6 eggs
flour
salt & pepper
3 Lt peanut oil
Maggi stock cube

METHOD:
Aloko:
Cut the plantain bananas and sweet potatoes into small diced cubes and fry in hot oil in large frying pan.l

Sauce:
Cut tomatoes and onions into small pieces. Put them in a bowl. Mix oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and stock cube. Make chili sauce with onion, salt and pepper in a pan.

Fish:
Clean fish if it’s fresh – once with water, then with lemon and put it in a bowl (otherwise use frozen fish)
Mix the flour, eggs, salt pepper and maggi stock cube.
Coat the fish pieces in this mixture
Put oil in a skillet until the oil is heated to bring the fish and cook until browned, then remove.
Chop the onion and pimentos, fry in a hot pan with a little oil. Add the tomatoes and season to taste.

Same with her bridesmaids! Amazingly cool, calm and collected.

Not only were they so calm, but the three girls along with friends and family had set up entire reception hall the morning of the wedding, as there had been a function on the night before. Sooo well organised… !

I LOVED shooting this wedding – I have known David since he was in nappies!! Ha ha – that just makes me feel very old…

Gorgeous day guys – congratulations and best of the best for you both for the future!

I’ll pop a few more pics up of the wedding and decorations soon – this one is just a bit of fun

I have a few more shots that I might load here down the track from the beach, as well as the marina where the reception was held. What a great day it was!

I have never entered before, and have no idea what the other entries will be like. But I enjoyed the challenge of writing a haiku to go with one of my photos.I know the syllables are not perfectly counted out, but apparently the original haiku were 3-5-3 and then changed to 5-7-5, so my 4-7-5 is not too terrible. I don’t think they’re judging on this so much as how the image is visually accompanied with the text and how it sounds, so long as it does not go above 17 syllables. But we’ll see I guess!

I know – tough job, but someone’s got to do it!

This is the first – the “Apricot and Orange Gateaux” and it has a beautiful (and delicious!) almond toffee “teardrop”, delicately balanced on top.

The whole thing melts in your mouth – the different layers of flavoured mousse – chocolate and almond and orange, and then the apricot “jelly” topping… even the extremely fine florentine (?) was backed with white chocolate. So many flavours and textures – the details makes all the difference!

I’m not a food stylist!

Ok, that out of the way… here’s the recipe for what I did here. they were pretty good, even though I slightly over cooked them. I still prefer my brownies with pecans or walnuts, but this was a “whim cook-fest” and I didn’t have any nuts on hand!

Ingredients:
1.5 cups brown sugar
200g butter
2 tablespoons water
150g block cooking chocolate
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 farm fresh eggs (from my wood delivery guy!)
1 1/3 cups plain flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 pack Tim Tam Crush biscuits

Directions:
Preheat oven to 180° C.
Prepare a baking pan with butter and grease-proof paper.
Combine sugar, butter, and water in a medium heavy duty saucepan. Bring to the boil while stirring constantly then remove from heat and cool, stirring occasionally.
Add the block chocolate, broken into pieces and then stir until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.
Add eggs one at a time, stirring well after each addition. It’s important that the mixture is not too hot or you’ll get scrambled eggs! I tipped my mixture into a metal bowl before adding the eggs to help cool it down, but then I was in a hurry to eat brownies!
Add the cocoa, flour, baking soda, and salt and stir until everything is blended and smooth.
Add the biscuits chopped into approx 2cm pieces (roughly into quarters) as well as all the crumbs. This is where I would add nuts if I’d had them, or anything really. You could add dried cranberries at this stage – I reckon that would be delicious!
Pour mixture into baking pan and put into oven for 20-25 minutes.
Check with a sharp knife to see if it comes out just a little sticky. If it doesn’t, put back in the over for another 5 minutes and check again. Remember that you want them a little UNDER-done, rather than over. They will set in the fridge also, as they have real chocolate in them.
When cooked, remove from the oven and set the tray on a cooling rack.
You want them to be still a little warm (well, I like them that way!) so when almost cool, cut them in the tray into squares and serve dusted with a little icing sugar. I tried them with raspberry jam and yoghurt! and it was delicious, but plain, or dusted with cocoa or served with cream is all good

I made laksa tonight! Yum… This time I made it pretty much from memory, and I think I added everything that was possible to add to laksa! Except for prawns – Tony likes his laksa more meaty than fishy

This is pretty much what I did:

Laksa Paste
INGREDIENTS:
1 shallot
2 cloves garlic
1 “thumb” both ginger and galangal, peeled
2 long red chillis
3 candlenuts
1 stalk lemongrass
1/2 bunch coriander including stems and washed roots
1 tsp shrimp paste
1 tsp tamarind paste
1/2 tsp tumeric powder

METHOD:
Roughly chop all ingredients, then pound together in a pestle and mortar (or food processor). You will use about half of this, but if kept in an airtight container, it will keep in the fridge for a few weeks. Pour a little peanut or olive oil ontop to help seal the air out.

Laksa
INGREDIENTS:
2 tins coconut cream or milk
500ml fish or chicken stock
2 chicken breasts, finely sliced
1 pack each fish balls & beef balls (purchased at Asian grocers)
broccolini bunch, chopped into 1″ lengths
2 carrots, peeled and chopped into straws
1/2 red capsicum
Vietnamese mint
1/2 bunch coriander
1 cup bean sprouts
1/2 cup snow peas
2 packs instant Udon noodles
dried onion and garlic (purchased at Asian grocers)
extra chopped chilli

METHOD:
Heat a little of the coconut oil from the top of the unshaken tin in a wok. Add half of the laksa paste previously made and cook until it separates and browns slightly. Add the coconut milk and stock and slowly bring to the boil. Add the chicken and cook a few minutes. Turn down the heat to a slow simmer and add the fish and beef balls.

Meanwhile boil the kettle and pour over the noodles. When the soup is nearly ready, add the broccolini and carrots.

Assemble the laksa by putting the hot noodles in a large bowl, then some sprouts and snow peas, then pour the soup and meat over. Top off with fresh herbs, extra chilli, dried onion and garlic, and extra coriander and red capsicum slices. Serve extra herbs and chilli on the table.

Other ingredients that can be added are prawns, white fish, tofu, beef, and you can use any stock that you prefer. There are many, many great recipes online – just make it with what you like best, but be sure to start from scratch with the laksa paste – it really makes all the difference!

They were married amongst family and friends in the main theatre, with Gavin and his two children rising up through the floor with the old “4 manual 29 rank organ”. Morag entered with her two boys flanking her sides. She was beautiful and proud, and the look on Gavin’s face when he saw her walking down the theatre aisle was priceless. Nervous, proud and overjoyed all at once!

An unique wedding, with priest, and prayers read, classically worded with a truly contemporary feel.

I was hired to shoot the inaugural “Gumboot Dinners” last Thursday night in Stirling, Adelaide Hills. This shot was taken at the first of four restaurants we visited on the night, The Table.

The Stirling Gum Boot Dinners launch the Stirling Autumn Garden Festival, a real celebration of gardens, gardening and gardeners on Sunday 17 April. Cleland will also be at The Festival, where everyone can walk on the wild side with some Cleland Wildlife Park animals. Cleland are celebrating their new Biodiversity Garden that was planted by community volunteers and funded by the Million Trees Project.

There were appearances from some of the residents of Cleland Wildlife Park too. A Barn Owl and an Olive Python came along and were introduced to patrons at each of the restaurants, much to the surprise of many!

From Sala Thai, we moved on to Tranquilo, The LocaVore and then onto the after-party at The Stirling Hotel.

It was a busy but fun night.

Stay tuned for photos from Sunday’s “Autumn Garden Festival” wrap-up and street party.

The ceremony and reception of Billie and Karina was held in Mt Crawford Forest this past weekend, and was officiated by Merrilyn Williams.

The weather was just perfect – sunny but cool, and the setting was equally perfect – green, lush and natural. Tall gums formed the canopy with Xanthorrhoea and other low shrubs, the backdrop behind the couple as they made their vows and exchanged rings.

Two beautiful women, committed and obviously deeply in love, shared this day with family and friends who cheered them on their way, supporting their desire to be wedded.

They, along with many, many other same-sex couples, would very much like their officiation to be legally recognised.

For some archaic reason, it is not.

This little legal omission however did not dampen Billie and Karina’s day, and Merrilyn carried out the ceremony as professionally and officially as any other marriage ceremony. A truly beautiful day that I was very proud to be a part of.

I had the pleasure and privilege to photograph some of Humna Suharwardy‘s henna work last week, this time on good friend, Sarah’s beautifully round pregnant belly!

It has been a few months since I have photographed her working, yet it seemed like just yesterday that we worked together. I captured the process from beginning to end, silently grabbing moments and movements of Humna’s skilled hand gripping the henna cone, swiftly yet delicately dancing across Sarah’s skin, forming the scrolls and swoops that gradually revealed the pattern that Humna says she “receives” from the sitter…

Humna is going to be leaving Adelaide after 7(?) years of calling this city her home. Over this time I have grown to love her art and her soul. I (among hundreds of others!) will miss her so much, but know that she is going to broaden her horizons, learn new skills, and grow even more as a strong and independent woman, in London!

I wish you all the love and success possible my dearest friend Humna. Thank you for all you have given, shared and revealed over the years. I hope, as you say, that you will return one day, even if just for a visit. But I hope even more that you find your roots and plant them somewhere else for a while and settle your heart for a time… x

Gemma invited me to photograph him and his friend, Ayla a couple of weeks ago – the two babies are, within hours, exactly the same age – these photos were taken at about 10 weeks.

I photographed the babies individually first, one then the other, then swapping back and forth between feeds and cuddles from their respective mums.

Then after they had rested, had a feed and a short nap, we popped the two of them together for a few shots.

It was such a fun and funny day! Tiny babies like these have a way of making you laugh and then tear up at their expressions and overall cuteness.

Thank you so much to Oli, Ayla, Gemma and Tamsin. xx

We “met” online through flickr back in 2007, and then officially at a flickr meet at Second Valley.

We have since become great friends, and have shared many hours discussing, taking and exhibiting photos together, including an exhibition for Feast entitled Breathing Space.

Paul asked me recently to take a shot of him for his cv, so we had a bit of fun with his studio lights and this is one of the pics taken – there are many more, and some fun and silly ones, but I think I like this, showing the gentle side of Paul’s personality; open, honest, caring and sensitive.

Thanks Paul, for your friendship – it means – you mean – a lot to me.

A young surfer begins his return journey home after a day riding the waves in Middleton…

I spent nearly five years living in Goolwa, where the Murray meets the sea. I would walk most evenings with the dog and camera along the beaches of Goolwa, Middleton, Pt Elliot and Victor Harbor, enjoying the peaceful moments and capturing them with whichever camera or mobile phone I had on me at the time.

I loved this time of day – the “magical” hour between when the sun hangs low in the sky, and a few minutes after it has sunk beyond the horizon. Experimenting with colour, light, solar flares and reflections in the sand, I would photograph this time the best I could to try and share it with others unable to be with me.

This photo was taken early on in the “second-life” of a Canon 300D, a completely unexpected and life-changing gift received from friends one day in the post. For some reason, I was never worried about damaging this camera, and would happily carry it up into the sand dunes, along the water’s edge and clambering over rocks, in order to get the shot I wanted.

This carelessness was to be the death of this camera after a few years, but before that time, the camera was integral to implanting the passion, drive and desire to take photos of all that I could see… weird and wonderful; sublime and serene…

I finally took an hour or two to visit the Old Adelaide Gaol a few weeks back. It was an eye opener for sure.

The most intriguing thing to me was an artwork that has been in storage (for who knows how long??) in the laundry area of the gaol, which incidentally is not open to the public.

I have no idea who created it, or when, or if it has ever been on display, but what I do know is that it should be treated with a little more respect than sitting covered in dust and spider webs …

The artwork is a sculpture made from wire, and is a large bell shape, possibly 2 meters high? The wire is twisted into letters, forming words, making up the letter that was written by the only woman to be executed in South Australia, Elizabeth Woolcock. She was convicted of murdering her husband by slowly poisoning him with mercury. The full story can be heard here, and the letter here.

I would love to know who created the work, why, when, and how it can be restored and displayed for the public somewhere, such as the SA Museum or Art Gallery.

More photos from the gaol can be seen on my flickr photostream.

Adelaide Gaol is one of South Australia’s oldest and most intriguing public buildings. It operated from 1841 – 1988, housing approximately 300,000 prisoners.

Step inside for a unique glimpse of prison life. See original cell blocks, 19th century architecture, the hanging tower, yards, gallows and prisoner graves.

Explore the site in your own time, join a tour or see the Gaol in a more eerie light on a night tour.

Located in the Adelaide Parklands, the gaol is a short walk from bus stop 1 on Port Road. Buses run frequently from the city to the Gaol Road / Port Road intersection.

Open Sunday – Friday, 10-am to 5pm (latest entry time 3.30pm.)

Cassie and John hired me to photograph their wedding in December 2010. A lovely, loving young couple, with some great fun, contemporary, yet at the same time, retro ideas for their ceremony.

It was a casual, sunset wedding held in the front garden of their home, with the reception in the backyard. John is an artist, and had created the decorations for the house, and “badges” for the wedding party consisting of painted cardboard birds of all shapes and colours, but mostly red birds, which was the theme for the wedding. Cassie’s dress was an delicate old-style one found online, and her posy was small with herbs and edible flowers.

The ceremony was carried out by Merrilyn Williams from Celebrate Life, and she made sure that the couples’ personalities and beliefs were catered for. It was real a pleasure working with Merrilyn again, this being my third wedding with her at the helm.

Her husband Sam was such a good sport, allowing us more time than was originally allocated to get the shots I wanted – he even let Make-up Artist Emma McNichol apply a bit of concealer!! The theme was “Moroccan” with richly coloured rugs and cushions, drapes and lanterns hanging from the ceiling of the permanent marquis that is built in Belair, high up above the city of Adelaide. The building is seemingly sitting in the tops of the prolific and tall gum trees that epitomise the Adelaide Hills, and is an add-on to the popular restaurant.

The girls surprised their guests with a modern wedding, including greeting and mingling prior to the actual ceremony, and then appearing from another entrance when the time had come for the vows, complete with a change of outfits!

The two young women with dreams for a more equal future for other same-sex couples wishing to “tie the knot” had hired celebrant Merrilyn Williams, who made sure that the ceremony ran smoothly, was entertaining and was incredibly meaningful for all family and friends in attendance.

This coming Thursday evening, an exhibition is being launched of works by Renee Sage (my mother) and myself. The title of the exhibition is “OffSpring” and it contains paintings done in oil, acrylic and mixed-media by Renee, and photography by me. The subject celebrates Spring, as well as the love shared by a mother and daughter, and their love of the beauty in life.

I’ll pop the “official” blurb below, but it has come about through a desire of us both to exhibit together and show a visual display of our love and life as mother and daughter. I am so proud of my mum in so many ways – not just her incredible ability as an artist, but her inner beauty even more so. She is loved by all who meet her, and most of all, by me. She is kind and generous and empathetic and strong – she has been the most amazing role model for me as I was growing up, throughout my young adult-hood and now into my middle-age…

She has always been there for me, has accepted my “oddities” and loved me all the more for them.

I have probably not been the easiest offspring to get along over the years, and have certainly taken the road less travelled, been less academic, less conforming and less fertile than my other siblings!

But I hope the challenges that I have given her, and the rest of my family for that matter, have been at least interesting, and not entirely dull.

I am so looking forward to seeing our work hanging side-by-side on the walls of this exhibition!

She is my (now) 10 ½ year old Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael). She has been my constant companion for that whole 10 ½ years, as she was assigned to me even before she was born. I held her at one day old, and she came to live with me at 8 weeks.

Luca is my first dog – we had a family dog – Mincie – when I was growing up, but I was never really very close to her for some reason. Whereas Luca is my girl. She is by my side now as I type, and is often found close-by. She greets me when I come home with bounds and squeals of delight. She plays like a puppy still, although she has slowed down considerably in the past year or so. She loves the beach, and is pretty good off-lead, apart from stealing other dogs’ balls!

I have a whole set of photos of her on my flickr, right from that first day she came home with me …

“Goolwa has a rich history of the River trade and was once a thriving River Port with Paddlesteamers and fishing boats opening inland Australia. It is the gateway to the Coorong National Park with its pristine eco environment. Held biennially at the historic wharf of Goolwa, it celebrates one of the best Wooden Boat Festivals in the southern hemisphere.

“In 2009, the Festival attracted over 10,000 people for the three days.”

There are many old relics of the wooden boats that used to frequent the river; some have been restored, some turned into artwork to remind the locals of the past, yet many lie around waiting to have their fate decided. This photo was taken of one such old boat, with it’s tarnished copper nails, peeling paint and cracked boards… I just love these old boats!

The Stirling Organic Market and Café is situated in the heart of Stirling in the Adelaide Hills on Druid Avenue, the first road on the right after the roundabout as you come into Stirling from the freeway. They have been a client of mine since 2005, when I approached them to build a website for the business.

5 years on, and I am still looking after their web needs. 5 years is a long time when it comes to online technologies, and Grahame approached me to update the website a couple of months ago. It was decided that we’d start with a re-draft of the written content, some new photos, and then build a totally new, vibrant and dynamic website from there.

Today was my second shoot at the market and café. It was a beautiful Spring morning and the place was packed, as it so often is. The staff were so friendly and clients too were incredibly at ease having a photographer milling amongst them while they sipped coffee, ate morning tea and browsed the market for fresh fruit and vegies, nuts, cakes, bread and other organic packaged goods.

The Organic Café makes the best coffee, and this chocolate cake is to die for – hard to believe it’s good for you too!

Look out for more photos from this shoot, and for the new website in the coming months.

This photo was taken at dusk, on the walk-way between Middleton and Pt Elliot. I fell in love with these little “fluff-tails”, and photographed them on a number of occasions. They dance so beautifully in the light, catching the last golden rays of sun, sending a shimmer of movement across the open fields when the wind would catch them.

This is my “Tuesday-Boy”, Pontus. I have looked after him for one day a week for most of his life. I have recently switched to only a half-day, as he now has a little brother, Lukas, and his mum is home from work for a while.

I take photos of Pontus most days I spend with him. However it is usually with the phone-cam, as he likes to look at them, and the phone is pretty hardy. He has taken many photos with it too

This photo was taken on a warm summer’s day just before we went out for a walk. I remember this time really well, as he had only just started calling me by his name for me, which was “Dee” – he couldn’t say “Mandi”, but shortened it to “Dee”, which I loved! The first time I have ever had a nick-name that I liked.

He’s wearing my hat, and he called it, “Dee’s tat” – as “hat” wasn’t in the vocab either, at that stage.

(Unfortunately) He has since increased his vocabulary immensely, including my full name… *sigh*

I love this kid so much!

THE Cat Empire’s message, on stage and in the studio, has always been about breaking down borders: musical, geographic, lingual.

I lived in Goolwa for about four and a half years. I would often go for early morning walks along the river, taking in the sunrise, the stillness and the calming properties of the water. I loved living so close to the water; Goolwa is where the Murray River meets the sea, so my home was literally surrounded by water. Goolwa is also known for it’s Wooden Boat Festival, held every year. People come from around the country, and often from overseas to see all manner of old, new and restored wooden vessels.

Unfortunately, the Murray River has been over-used upstream, and there has been a serious threat to her existence. Continual dredging of sand at the mouth has been necessary to keep it open since 2002. The Coorong, or wetland area at Goolwa is dying. There are many political, economic and environmental reasons that the Murray is sick, but it is going to take a “whole of country” mindset to make any difference to the once “Mighty” river ecosystem.

Looking at it realistically, it seems almost impossible to see how it will ever be rectified. I treasure the times I spent in this magical place.
